Trump map shows US flag across Canada, Mexico and Greenland

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump posted a map on Truth Social showing the U.S. flag across much of North America. The image covered Canada, Mexico and Greenland beneath a design labeled “United States of America.” It also extended across Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. Trump included no written explanation with the post. The image kept geographic labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of America.

Trump map shows US flag across Canada, Mexico and Greenland
The Truth Social map placed Canada, Mexico and Greenland beneath US flag imagery.

Trump published the map at 10:43 a.m. EDT on Sept. 7 through his official Truth Social account. The post announced no border change, treaty or government directive. Canada and Mexico remain independent countries with internationally recognized borders. Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Iceland remains an independent country. The image did not identify any legal process that would alter the status of the countries or territories shown under the U.S. flag.

The map followed other geography-related posts from the president during the same period. Earlier posts included images replacing New Mexico’s name with “New America.” Trump also promoted “Lake America” as a new name for Lake Ontario. His administration previously directed federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico. The president has also called for U.S. ownership of Greenland. Danish and Greenlandic authorities have rejected proposals to transfer control of the Arctic territory.

Mexico answers map with sovereignty statement

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded by restating Mexico’s independence and sovereignty. She said the country would not become a colony or protectorate of another nation. Her comments came during September, when Mexico holds annual events marking its independence. Trump’s map placed Mexico beneath the same U.S. flag pattern that covered Canada and other areas. The post provided no legal document or bilateral agreement related to the U.S.-Mexico border. Existing border arrangements remained unchanged after the image appeared.

Canada also appeared fully covered by the U.S. flag in the image. The president has previously raised the idea of Canada joining the United States. On Sept. 7, he separately threatened restrictions on Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier unless it moved production to the United States. Canada also introduced retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion of U.S. goods after trade negotiations stalled. Those trade measures remained separate from the map post and did not alter Canada’s territorial or political status.

    Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty

Greenland was another prominent territory shown beneath the U.S. flag. The president has repeatedly said the United States should acquire Greenland and has cited national security concerns. Denmark and Greenland have rejected U.S. ownership. The European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership package for Greenland covering 2026 and 2027. The program includes support for digital connectivity, energy, education and sustainable mining. Denmark also sent conscripts to Greenland in early September for Arctic military training.

The Truth Social post remained without a caption explaining the map’s purpose or legal meaning. It did not announce a government policy, territorial transfer or change to existing national borders. Mexico continues to operate as a sovereign country, while Canada remains an independent state. Greenland continues as a self-governing territory within the Danish kingdom. Iceland also retains its independent status. The image therefore stood as a presidential social media post without an accompanying measure changing the legal status of any territory shown.
